Ceramic Mural: Saint Michael The Horseman

Artist: Marco Zubar, 1925 - 1990

Dated: 1971-1981

Dimensions: 4’-0”  H x 5’-0”  W. x 2” D

Material: Ceramic mosaic, ceramic murals on wall

Features:

 - Saint Michael

 - His  galloping horse

 - deep blues and greens—the water below and the sky above

 - ¾” thick plywood backer board

- Integrated holes designed into the ceramic mosiac’s form for suspending the assembly

- Exposed and finished edges

Note:

Marco created his own glaze recipes, tested their firing performance on thousands of test tiles--criss-crossing glazes above and below one another to determine their predictability; rolled his own clay; rendered his own designs; cut out the tile forms; and built his on kiln for double firing them.  My father assured me the pieces would retain their brilliance and strength even if they sat at the bottom of the sea for 100 years--as high fired ceramics sometimes do.
